Rayong Province Seeks Funds for Wastewater Treatment Projects to Cope with EEC

Aug 2020

The Rayong Provincial Administration Organization, as one of three provinces where the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) is located, has requested new funds from the EEC Policy Committee to enhance wastewater treatment in Pluak Daeng district and the province’s pollution control area. The enhancements would help counter the environmental impact from the expansion of industrial estates and communities.

The EEC aims for the economic development of Thailand’s Eastern Seaboard and turn three eastern provinces – Chonburi, Rayong, and Chachoengsao – into a hub for technological manufacturing and services with strong connectivity to neighboring countries in South East Asia by land, sea and air.

The organization’s head mentioned that this project is necessary to prevent negative environmental impact from the expansion of industrial estates and communities and also presented details of the USD 75 million project scope.

The first component of the planned project comprises the construction of a wastewater treatment system in Map Yang Phon and Pluak Daeng  at a total cost of THB 730 million (USD 24 million), helping treat around 4.5 billion cubic meters of wastewater generated daily by a population of 55,000. Construction is expected to start between 2020 and 2021.

The second component is the enhancement of the wastewater treatment system in Rayong City Municipality and Maptaphut Municipality areas at a cost of THB 804 million and THB 405 million respectively. Work on this is expected to begin between 2021 and 2022. In addition, a wastewater treatment system will be constructed in the Ban Chang Municipality area with an investment of THB 370 million, with work on the project starting between 2022 and 2023.
