Australia Solar Farm Expected to Supply 20% of Singapore’s Energy Needs

Nov 2020

Australia is planning to construct a massive solar farm in its deserted Outback, between two cities in its Northern Territory, Alice Springs and Darwin. The farm, which will cost USD 15 billion to build, is expected to occupy more than 46 square miles, 3 times larger than the world’s current largest solar farm in China, and will be visible from space.

The solar farm, run by Singapore-based company, Sun Cable, will start construction in 2023 and start commercial operations in 2027 and is expected to supply 10 gigawatts of electricity. One-third of the sustainable energy generated will be used to power remote areas of Australia’s Northern Territory, which is usually supplied by diesel-powered generators, while the rest will be exported to Singapore via 2,800 mile long underwater cables. This exported energy is expected to supply 20% of Singapore’s energy needs, reducing the country’s reliance on gas for power.
