UK and Thailand Collaborate to Create Smart Cities

Nov 2020

The UK and Thailand have partnered together to launch the “Smart City Handbook”, an initiative between both countries to create smarter cities through urban planning and the integration of smart technologies. The Handbook, commissioned by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), provides information on smart buildings, housings, infrastructure, mobility, and energy. It also outlines Thailand’s smart city landscape and provides examples of smart cities in the UK.

Urbanization is considered to be a key challenge, with more than half of Thailand’s population living in cities, creating challenges regarding transport, pollution, health and wellbeing, poverty, and inequality. To address this challenge in Thailand, the UK has proposed various measures, including an improved flood management system in Lad Phrao, Bangkok, as well as a data center for collecting data for decision making in Bangkok. The country has also chosen Thailand as the focal market for its Tech Export Academy for the Asia Pacific, with 30 British smart cities companies planning to undertake a trade mission to Thailand in 2021.
