Singapore has launched Smart Nation 2.0, a renewed strategy to deepen digital transformation across society and secure its leadership in technological innovation. Since the original plan’s initiation in 2014, Singapore has introduced numerous digital services, cashless payment systems, and e-government platforms, positioning itself as a frontrunner in digital integration. As advancements like AI reshape the global landscape, Smart Nation 2.0 aims to strengthen Singapore’s digital capabilities to capitalize on emerging opportunities while addressing the challenges of a fast-evolving technology environment.
A primary focus of Smart Nation 2.0 is on driving economic growth through technological empowerment for individuals and businesses. To achieve this, Singapore is investing significantly in AI, with more than 150 AI research and development teams established locally, including collaborations between industry and academia. Initiatives such as the “AI for Science” program will facilitate interdisciplinary research across fields like biomedical and materials sciences, positioning Singapore as a key player in advanced technology solutions. Additionally, Singapore’s small and medium-sized enterprises are being encouraged to adopt AI and other digital tools to streamline operations and enhance productivity.
In fostering a responsible and connected digital environment, the refreshed strategy also addresses the potential risks posed by new technologies. Recognizing challenges like misinformation and data privacy, Singapore is implementing safeguards, including a Code of Practice for Online Safety and additional guidelines for app stores to ensure age-appropriate content. Furthermore, government-supported programs will encourage citizen-driven digital solutions, like the “Build for Good” initiative, which empowers residents to create applications for local needs.
To bolster digital security, Smart Nation 2.0 strengthens resilience in critical infrastructure and online platforms. Recent updates to the Cybersecurity Act and the upcoming Digital Infrastructure Act will enhance defenses against both cyber and physical disruptions, while new regulations will address online threats such as scams and cyberbullying. Singapore plans to establish a dedicated agency to streamline support for affected users, ensuring swift action and maintaining reliability in digital services. These measures aim to create a secure digital landscape that underpins the country’s continued growth and technological leadership.
