Indonesia’s Research and Food Agencies Collaborate for Food Registration Using AI

Nov 2024

Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) have partnered to explore the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in optimizing food registration processes. This collaboration follows a study on BPOM’s readiness to adopt AI and the challenges faced by food entrepreneurs during registration, according to BRIN’s Macroeconomic and Financial Research Center Head, Zamroni.

The initiative stems from a 2022 memorandum of understanding between BRIN and BPOM, focused on enhancing research and innovation in food and medicine to boost the competitiveness of local industries. Zamroni emphasized that food plays a central role in Indonesia’s sustainable development strategy, aligning with President Prabowo Subianto’s program to prioritize food security. He added that food safety and quality are crucial components of this effort.

As part of the project, BRIN will conduct detailed research on food safety, while BPOM will oversee the safety of food products in circulation. The use of AI will enable more accurate analysis of Big Data related to food products, distribution, and consumption, enhancing efficiency.

BPOM’s Deputy for Processed Food Supervision, Elin Herlina, noted that the agency regulates food processing and distribution to ensure product safety and quality. She explained that BPOM issues permits for processed foods, ensuring they meet the required standards before reaching consumers.
