International Collaborations Support Singapore’s 30 by 30 Food Security Initiative

Nov 2024

In an ambitious move to bolster Singapore’s food security and technological expertise in agriculture, local farms are increasingly engaging in international collaborations to achieve the nation’s “30 by 30” goal, which aims to produce 30% of its nutritional needs locally by 2030. Notably, Tomato Town, a local agri-tech company, is enhancing its tomato production through a partnership with a Japanese firm, bringing in heat-resilient seeds to cultivate varieties like Japanese cherry tomatoes and heirloom tomatoes. This initiative not only aims to improve crop yields in Singapore’s challenging climate but also meets rising consumer demand for premium, locally-grown produce.

The strategic partnerships extend beyond bilateral collaborations, with several international agri-tech players investing in Singapore’s farming sector. The United Arab Emirates-based Future Food Foundry recently announced a significant investment merging two local farms to create the largest plant superfood ecosystem in Singapore. This move highlights the international interest in leveraging Singapore’s high-tech farming capabilities, focusing on innovative, scalable solutions that enhance food security and sustainability.

Singapore’s farming landscape is set to transform under the Lim Chu Kang masterplan, which intends to develop the area into a hub for high-tech agriculture. The plan has attracted various international firms, which have secured land tenders to establish their operations, contributing to a diverse agri-tech ecosystem. These developments not only aim to increase local production but also to foster knowledge exchange and technological advancement in agriculture, ensuring long-term sustainability and self-reliance in food production.
