Air New Zealand has embarked on an ambitious project to modernize its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner fleet. The first of 14 aircraft arrived in Singapore on October 14th, 2024, to undergo a comprehensive cabin retrofit. This initiative will see the airline become the world’s first to retrofit a Boeing 787-9 nose-to-tail, transforming the passenger experience with new seats, entertainment systems, and cabin interiors.
The retrofit process involves a complete overhaul of the aircraft’s interior, including the removal of existing seats, carpets, curtains, and lavatory fixtures. In their place, Air New Zealand will install new seats across all cabins, with a particular focus on the Business Premier cabin, which will feature the luxurious Business Premier Luxe product. Additionally, the airline will introduce new inflight entertainment systems and amenities to enhance passenger comfort and convenience.
This fleet-wide refresh is scheduled to be completed over the next two years. By modernizing its Dreamliner fleet, Air New Zealand aims to maintain its position as a leading airline in the Asia-Pacific region and provide its customers with a world-class travel experience.
Air New Zealand selected Singapore for its Boeing 787-9 fleet retrofit based on the city’s established reputation in the aviation sector, particularly in maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) capabilities. Singapore houses some of the most advanced MRO facilities in the world, including those operated by ST Engineering, which has been a long-term partner of Air New Zealand. This partnership leverages ST Engineering’s extensive experience and technological capabilities to handle complex projects such as full cabin refurbishments.
