The recently released National Population Health Survey (NPHS) 2023 by Singapore’s Ministry of Health highlights encouraging improvements in several lifestyle and preventive health areas. Notable gains include an increase in physical activity, a decline in smoking rates, and improvements in mental health. Vaccination uptake for influenza and pneumococcal diseases also saw a boost, though some areas, such as breast cancer screening, showed a slight decline, indicating areas for further improvement under the Healthier SG initiative.
Key trends in healthier living include a continued reduction in smoking prevalence, with the rate dropping to 8.8% in 2023, and a rise in physical activity participation, driven largely by commuting and leisure activities. Mental health support-seeking behavior improved, with more residents open to accessing both professional and informal networks for help. The government plans to expand initiatives like the National Steps Challenge and explore further tobacco control measures to sustain these positive outcomes.
In line with efforts to encourage healthier diets, the government is taking further steps to reduce sodium and saturated fat intake. Following the success of Nutri-Grade labeling for beverages, which has reduced sugar consumption, similar measures will be extended to prepacked salt, sauces, seasonings, instant noodles, and cooking oil. These efforts aim to increase consumer awareness, spur industry reformulation, and lower the prevalence of chronic conditions like hypertension and hyperlipidemia. Public education campaigns and voluntary labeling in food establishments will also help consumers make informed, healthier dietary choices.
The NPHS 2023 highlights positive strides in Singapore’s public health landscape, particularly in physical activity, smoking cessation, and mental health support. These improvements underscore the effectiveness of ongoing government initiatives and the growing awareness of preventive health among the population. However, areas like breast cancer screening require attention to ensure comprehensive coverage. By continuing to promote healthy lifestyles, expand support services, and implement evidence-based policies, Singapore is improving the overall health and well-being of its citizens.
