The Singapore government has granted conditional approvals to import 1.4 gigawatts (GW) of low-carbon electricity from two major solar power projects in Indonesia, supporting Singapore’s clean energy goals. This initiative will be led by two consortia, TotalEnergies-RGE and Shell-Vena, through their respective projects, with a combined investment value of approximately USD 20 billion. Electricity from the projects will be transmitted to Singapore via a jointly developed subsea transmission cable, underscoring the commitment to enhance regional cooperation in renewable energy.
The first of these approvals, granted to the joint venture Singa Renewables—formed by TotalEnergies and RGE—will support a 1.0 GW solar photovoltaic (PV) project in Indonesia’s Riau Province. The project aims not only to export clean energy to Singapore but also to supply solar power to Indonesia’s domestic market, powering green industrial zones and contributing to Indonesia’s sustainability targets. This collaboration aligns with Indonesia’s ambitious goals to increase renewable energy deployment from 13% in 2023 to 31% by 2050 and supports its long-term target of net zero by 2060.
In a parallel effort, Vanda RE, a joint venture majority-owned by Singapore’s Gurīn Energy, has been awarded a conditional license by Singapore’s Energy Market Authority (EMA) for its Vanda Solar & Battery Project, which will be based in Indonesia. This utility-scale project includes a significant 2,000 MW of solar PV capacity and 4,400 MWh of battery storage, designed to deliver 300 MW of continuous, zero-emission power to Singapore by 2028. Leveraging Indonesia’s abundant land and solar resources, the Vanda Solar & Battery Project is part of a broader strategy by Indonesia and Singapore to establish a green electricity trading corridor between the two countries, with benefits for both sides in terms of energy security, sustainability, and economic growth.
These combined projects will contribute to Singapore’s growing reliance on renewable energy sources while enhancing energy security through a diversified energy supply chain. By harnessing Indonesia’s abundant solar resources, Singapore strengthens its position as a regional leader in sustainable development and renewable energy innovation, with the goal of providing reliable, low-carbon energy for its population and achieving long-term sustainability.
