PNE AG, a Germany-based leader in wind energy development, is actively seeking sustainable partners for the USD 4.6 billion Hon Trau offshore wind power project, located in Vietnam’s Binh Dinh province.
During a recent meeting with Vietnam’s Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, the company’s executive vice president discussed the project’s complexities, providing updates on ongoing wind surveys and pre-feasibility studies. The meeting, attended by both Vietnamese authorities and the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Vietnam (AHK Vietnam), focused on the challenges of implementing the 2,000-MW project.
Vietnamese officials recognized the urgent need for substantial energy investments to fuel the country’s growth and reaffirmed their commitment to renewable energy as a long-term strategy. The Deputy Minister emphasized that the government would prioritize the development of both onshore and offshore wind power, in addition to solar energy, to mitigate potential power shortages. He assured PNE AG of the Ministry’s support in overcoming any challenges and suggested adopting a phased approach for the project to align with Vietnam’s national Power Development Plan VIII (PDP VIII).
PNE AG began studies for the Hon Trau project in 2019, and in November 2022, the company signed a memorandum of understanding with Binh Dinh authorities to move the project forward. With a target capacity of 2,000 MW, the project will be developed in three phases, with the first 750 MW expected to be operational by 2030. This collaboration represents a significant step in advancing Vietnam’s renewable energy goals.
