Singapore Strengthens Maritime Defense with Commissioning of Invincible-Class Submarines

Oct 2024

Singapore has officially commissioned its first two Invincible-class submarines, RSS Invincible and RSS Impeccable. This milestone marks a significant upgrade in the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN)’s submarine fleet, enhancing its ability to protect Singapore’s waters, secure key maritime routes, and contribute to regional stability. These submarines, built by Germany’s Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), are custom-designed to operate in Singapore’s unique conditions, featuring advanced automation, extended underwater endurance, and optimized ergonomics for local requirements.

The Invincible-class submarines reflect a strategic progression in Singapore’s naval capabilities, following 25 years of experience since acquiring its first Challenger-class submarines from Sweden. Designed to withstand the increased salinity and warmth of Singaporean waters, these submarines also feature enhancements like higher levels of automation and 50% greater underwater endurance compared to the previous Archer-class submarines. The new design includes ergonomic improvements tailored to Singaporeans, with controls positioned for ease of use and accommodations upgraded to meet modern standards, including dedicated facilities for female submariners.

As part of Singapore’s broader defense strategy, the RSN’s enhanced fleet will operate within a sophisticated naval network, further integrated with upcoming technological capabilities like F-35 stealth aircraft and advanced artillery. The SAF’s ongoing modernization aligns with evolving defense needs, preparing Singapore for future security challenges that include digital threats and autonomous capabilities. The RSN’s move from operating second-hand submarines to commissioning new, purpose-built submarines underscores Singapore’s commitment to strengthening its maritime defense through self-reliant innovation and tailored solutions.

Singapore expects to welcome two more Invincible-class submarines, RSS Illustrious and RSS Inimitable, by 2028 as part of a long-term plan to reinforce the RSN’s operational readiness and defense capabilities. These additional vessels, launched in Germany, will complete Singapore’s strategic investment in a modern submarine fleet, further cementing the RSN’s role in maintaining secure, free passage across the region’s critical sea lines.
