ExxonMobil, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Singapore, and ASTAR have launched the ExxonMobil-NTU-ASTAR Corporate Lab to develop solutions to reduce carbon emissions and foster sustainability.
The USD 44.5 million (SGD 60 million) lab, inaugurated by Mr. Heng Swee Keat, Deputy Prime Minister, focuses on advancing research in five key areas: 1) converting biomass into lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions fuels for aviation, maritime, and chemical sectors; 2) utilizing carbon capture and industrial brines for alternative construction materials; 3) turning methane into low-carbon hydrogen and solid carbon materials; 4) developing efficient carbon capture and carbonation technology for industry by-products; and 5) exploring large-scale carbon application in concrete. This collaboration seeks to leverage Singapore’s scientific capabilities to address real-world challenges, promoting industry-academia synergy to drive innovation.
Over the next five years, the Corporate Lab will conduct joint research programs to enhance resource efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Supported by Singapore’s Research, Innovation and Enterprise 2025 plan, this initiative underscores the commitment to fostering industry-relevant R&D efforts and accelerating progress towards a net-zero future. Through the integration of industry-aligned research and academia, the lab embodies a synergistic approach to problem-solving, poised to yield transformative outcomes that resonate globally.
