Melexis, a Belgian microelectronics firm, has opened its largest wafer testing facility in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia, following a EUR 70 million (USD 77 million) investment. This development represents a significant effort to meet the growing global semiconductor demand and expand Melexis’ presence in the Asia-Pacific region.
Strategically located next to key supplier X-FAB’s wafer foundry in Sama Jaya High Tech Park, the 4,500-square-meter, four-story building improves logistical efficiency while incorporating energy-saving technologies and a solar system that generates 30,000 kWh per month. Inspired by local longhouse architecture, the facility is both environmentally conscious and operationally advanced, housing 90 wafer test machines for Integrated Circuits (ICs).
Kuching’s skilled workforce enhances recruitment potential, and the expansion is a major milestone as semiconductor demand is expected to double over the next decade. Melexis is also fostering regional innovation through collaborations, including the Local Pioneer Talent Program in partnership with universities and Sarawak Microelectronics Design (SMD).
