Airbus SE announced on 30 August that it will invest MYR 505 million (USD 121 million) for three key initiatives to enhance the aviation and aerospace industry in Malaysia. The announcement was made during the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing ceremony between Airbus SE and Malaysia’s largest airline, the AirAsia Group, witnessed by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.
The initiatives include expanding its maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility–Sepang Aircraft Engineering (SAE); establishing the Airbus Malaysia Digital Initiative; and increasing participation in the Aerospace Malaysia Innovation Centre (AMIC), an industrial research institute, lead by Airbus and Rolls Royce. Airbus SE CEO, Guillaume Faury said these initiatives will significantly enhance Airbus’ presence in Malaysia, which is one of its most important markets in Asia.
Airbus stated that the facilities would incorporate the latest smart technologies, including data analysis and planning using the Airbus Skywise’s digital platform and automated inspection techniques. Additionally, under the Airbus Malaysia Digital Initiative, Airbus will work with local stakeholders to develop a master plan and implement dedicated projects to enhance the competitiveness of the Malaysian aerospace sector.
With regard to AMIC, Airbus will appoint an Innovation Technical Director to support the non-profit organization and increase its funding for joint research programs, including a study on the potential production of alternative and sustainable aviation biofuels in Malaysia.
