Viettel Partners with Ericsson and Nokia for Comprehensive 5G Deployment in Vietnam

Oct 2024

Vietnam’s leading telecommunications company Viettel has recently expanded its long-term collaboration with Ericsson by selecting the Swedish company to lead the majority of its nationwide 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) deployment.

Accordingly, Ericsson’s 5G products and services will soon be rolled out across most Vietnamese provinces, including the capital, Hanoi, and the northern and central regions. Additionally, Ericsson will upgrade the current 4G network of Viettel. This partnership highlights the strong, collaborative relationship between the two firms, aiming to build a robust digital infrastructure in Vietnam and enhance connectivity through 5G technology.

The Ericsson Radio System is set to improve Viettel’s network capabilities, enabling faster and more reliable 5G services across the country. The two companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to further promote 5G adoption and collaborate on developing innovative applications and a developer ecosystem in Vietnam.

In addition to the partnership with Ericsson, Viettel is also collaborating with Nokia for the first deployment of 5G technology across 22 provinces. Accordingly, Nokia will provide 5G equipment from its AirScale portfolio, deploying 2,500 sites in total.

The AirScale baseband, Massive MIMO radios, and Remote Radio Head products will be powered by Nokia’s energy-efficient ReefShark technology, ensuring superior coverage and capacity. Notably, this is also the first time that locally manufactured 5G equipment will be used in Vietnam.

In a significant development, Nokia announced in June that its 5G AirScale equipment would be produced at Foxconn’s factories in Bac Giang province. This marks a crucial milestone for both companies as they advance 5G technology in the region.

Vietnam’s Ministry of Information and Communications has identified 5G as a vital component of the country’s national infrastructure. By 2030, Vietnam expects its digital economy to contribute between 20% and 30% of its GDP, driven by advancements like 5G.
