Vietnam Partners with Denmark and Australia to Foster Sustainable Agriculture

Jun 2024

In May 2024, the Danish Minister for Food, Agriculture, and Fisheries, along with a delegation of Danish agri-food companies, visited Vietnam to engage in high-level discussions on sustainable food production and efficient supply chains. During this visit, Denmark and Vietnam signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to foster the green transition in food and agricultural production, aimed at creating a more sustainable and resilient food system. Denmark, notable for having one of the highest export rates per capita to Vietnam among EU countries, sees the agri-food sector as a significant component of its exports to the region.

The agricultural collaboration between Denmark and Vietnam has been exemplified by the SSC Food program, which initially focused on improving animal feed production through capacity building and establishing a legislative framework for the prudent use of veterinary drugs. The program’s ongoing second phase concentrates on enhancing food chain capacities, combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and improving feed control, traceability, and food recall procedures.

Additionally, Vietnam is engaging with Australian partners to advance sustainable agriculture. In discussions with the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), Vietnam expressed a need for support to optimize agricultural investments and adapt to challenges posed by new-generation free trade agreements, revised investment policies, and a global shift towards organic agriculture with reduced emissions. This commitment is part of Vietnam’s broader strategy to promote efficient, sustainable agriculture that prioritizes product value, competitiveness, and supply chain integration from processing to market expansion, encouraging green, organic, and circular agricultural practices.
