Sarawak, an East Malaysian state located in Borneo, has announced the establishment of Southeast Asia’s first climate change center to spearhead Malaysia’s response to the global crisis. This central hub will coordinate, manage, and support all climate change initiatives and carbon trading within Sarawak.
The Sarawak state government is formulating a climate change policy aimed at establishing a baseline for carbon footprints. This initiative will empower communities, businesses, and policymakers to address emissions and promote low-carbon technologies, paving the way for a sustainable future in Sarawak. At present, the feasibility study for this center has reached its final stages, marking the path for its development. Furthermore, Sarawak is drafting blueprints for a low-carbon society to enhance waste and flood management, reduce urban carbon emissions, and promote green technologies and practices to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
Sarawak is at the forefront of advancing decarbonization and green energy initiatives, aligning with both local and global environmental objectives. The state government has also implemented the Carbon Storage and Forest Carbon Activity Rules 2022, establishing a regulatory framework that supports forest conservation projects and sustainability efforts through carbon credit systems. Sarawak is exploring green bonds and international financing to implement climate mitigation technologies, emphasizing the importance of global collaboration, effective policies, and technological advancements in achieving a sustainable green economy. The state’s vision for a greener Sarawak involves substantial investments in green technologies and infrastructure to diversify the energy mix beyond conventional sources.
