Quang Ngai to Build Carbon-Free Islands in Collaboration with Korean and Vietnamese Companies

Nov 2019

A memorandum of understanding (MOU) on an initiative to help islands in the province of Quang Ngai become carbon-free was signed on November 14 by the Quang Ngai People’s Committee, three companies of the Republic of Korea (SK Innovation, Doosan Heavy Industries and Ingine), and Vingroup of Vietnam. The MOU aims to build Ly Son Islands and An Binh Islet as the first ‘zero carbon’ islands in central Vietnam.

In the initial stage, Quang Ngai will work with the Vietnamese and RoK businesses to provide Environmentally friendly technologies for An Binh Island, which has 500 households and an area of about 69 hectares. SK Innovation will consider the application of plastics recycling technologies. It will supply LED lamps to replace incandescent light bulbs and halogen lamps at agencies and organizations’ buildings and on streets, along with solar cookers. Doosan Heavy Industries will continue maintaining and installing more desalination systems in An Binh. Ingine plans to install a wave power system with a capacity of 50 – 100kW on the island in 2020 to help reduce costs and solve Environmental issues caused by diesel generators. Meanwhile, Vingroup will present 20 electric motorbikes to An Binh to help reduce air pollution.

Ly Son Islands, a popular eco-tour site in Viet Nam, with a population of 22,000, hosts nearly 300,000 tourists each year. In 2017, the islands debuted the first solar power system, supplying power 24 hours a day to 400 islanders living in An Binh Islet. An Binh Islet – three miles from Ly Son Islands – started using fresh water from a specially-built desalination station with funding from Korean Heavy Industries Doosan Vina in 2012. The carbon-free island initiative will help boost local socio-economic development, reduce pollution and ensure Energy security towards sustainable development in the district.
