Hybrid Glaucoma Class Launched by Hanoi Eye Hospital and Novartis

Nov 2022

The Glaucoma Hybrid Patient Class, a hybrid patient education model combining in-person and online platforms, was introduced on October 2022 by the Hanoi Eye Hospital and Novartis Vietnam.

In contrast to conventional patient classes held face-to-face in hospitals, this model is hybrid, aiming at allowing more patients to attend. It also can assist patients and caregivers, who are unable to go to the hospital, to have access to health information, medical advice, and answers to questions about glaucoma.

From October to December 2022, the program will be held at three renowned eye hospitals in Vietnam, including the Hanoi Eye Hospital, the Da Nang Eye Hospital, and the Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital.

Each hybrid patient class is implemented simultaneously on two platforms: live in the hospital and online through digital platforms. In the hospital, the approach offers patients infographics about the prevalence and risk of glaucoma. In digital channels such as Zalo, Youtube, and the Hanoi Eye Hospital website, the initiative will be implemented to maximize the effectiveness of patients’ access to knowledge.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that glaucoma is the second most common cause of blindness in the world. Around 79.6 million people (ages 40 to 80) worldwide are estimated to have glaucoma as of 2020; that figure is expected to rise to 111.8 million by 2040, with 47% of those affected being Asian.
