Battery-Powered Public Transport Vehicles Introduced in Hoi An

Jul 2019

The city of Hoi An in Vietnam has introduced 30 battery-powered cars as part of the city authority’s efforts to go green. These cars are being used to carry local residents and tourists moving around in the city’s old quarter, providing an alternative to gasoline-powered transportation options. Currently, the battery powered vehicles are operating on six routes, connecting 14 streets and two popular destinations- Cua Dại Beach and Thanh Ha Pottery Village. Tickets price range from 10,000 VND – 15,000 VND (~ 50 cents) The city expects to raise the number of car to 90 by 2022.

Before this launch of battery-powered cars, Hoi An has launched a pilot bicycle sharing system in collaboration with the German Development Co-operation Agency (GIZ) and Health Bridge Canada.

Hoi An Ancient City is recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage site. The town hosts at least 10,000 vehicles each day which causes serious congestion in the afternoon when coaches carrying tourists arrive. These projects aim to reduce noise and ensure safety in the old quarter.
