Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) is projected to carry out 218 anti-flood projects with a total cost of nearly USD 344 million (VND 8 trillion) in 2019 to address chronic flooding and improve the water Environment within the city’s area.
According to the flood reduction plan 2019 by the People’s Committee, the fund will allocate USD 215 million (VND 5 trillion) for 77 ongoing flood prevention projects; USD 86 million (VND 2 trillion) for the start of 47 new projects this year and USD 35.2 million (VND 819 billion) for 94 future projects.
The city will focus first on flooding prevention in central area, which covers a population of 6.5 million. In addition to flood prevention, the authority will also work on increase water storage space.
The People’s Committee of HCMC will work closely with Department of Science and Technology and the agencies concerned to study advanced technology for the implementation of drainage projects, waste water treatment in order to save costs and land sources. Most of the funds currently are from the city’s budget. Authority is also calling for investment under the public-private partnership (PPP) model.
