A master plan to develop Vietnamese seaports for the period 2021-2030 was recently approved by Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung. The two main goals of the plan are to optimize the efficiency of the seaport system and to improve connectivity of seaports with the general transportation system.
According to the World Bank, logistics costs accounted for around 21% of Vietnam’s GDP in 2019. In the preparation of the master plan, seaport development planning will focus on improving connectivity with local and international seaports, as well as other types of transport Infrastructure such as roads, railways, airports and in-land waterway systems in order to increase the efficiency of investments in seaport development, while reducing logistic costs.
Important factors to be considered for the development of the plan include current natural conditions, existing resources and seaports, forecast transportation demand, impact of climate change and the effect of science and technology on seaport development.
