Turkey Supplies Torpedo Countermeasure to Indonesian Navy

Apr 2019

Aselsan, a Turkish defense electronics company, is supplying its ZOKA range of acoustic torpedo countermeasure for Indonesian Navy (Tentara Nasional Indonesia – Angkatan Laut or TNI-AL). The equipment will be installed in TNI A-L’s Type 209/1400 Nagapasa boat.

The ZOKA range of countermeasure consists of jammers and decoys. Jammers will produce noises that will be able to saturate the acoustic operating frequencies of known torpedoes. Decoys, on the other hand, can mimic the host submarine’s hydrographic and acoustic characteristics. Both functionalities exist to protect vessels against hostile torpedoes that may be locked on to the boat, allowing it to escape unharmed.

Indonesia purchased three Type 209/1400 boats from Daewoo, the South Korean conglomerate, during Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) in 2011. Two boats, Nagapasa (403) and Ardadedali (404), have been delivered to Indonesia, while the final submarine, Alugoro (405) is still in production.
