Thailand to Clean Up Bangkok’s Tangled Telecoms Cables

Jun 2024

Thailand’s National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission (NBTC) has initiated a project to organize the tangled telecom cables in Bangkok. The plan, reported by The Nation, involves organizing 440.21 km of cables along 151 routes in Bangkok and nearby provinces and installing cables underground on 32 routes covering over 67 km.

The project will be managed by the NBTC in collaboration with the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA). Various telecom companies, including state-owned National Telecom (NT), AIS (via subsidiary Advanced Wireless Network and its recent acquisition Triple T Broadband), True Corp, Interlink Telecom, United Information Highway, and Symphony Communication, will participate in the installation process. Each company has been assigned specific routes for the initiative.

The overhead tangle of telecom cables has been a characteristic sight in Bangkok due to the faster and cheaper method of deploying them. However, these cables have also posed safety hazards and inconveniences to residents. The NBTC’s project aims to enhance both the safety and aesthetics of the city by organizing and relocating these cables underground.

The NBTC and MEA plan to streamline the underground deployment process while introducing stringent regulations for new fiber infrastructure installations. The project is targeted for completion by the end of 2024.
