Technology and Power Company Gstar Begins Construction of Silicon Wafer Factory in Indonesia

May 2024

Gstar has recently commenced the construction phase of its silicon rod and silicon wafer factory in Indonesia. In Jakarta, a new 60,000 square meter factory is under construction. The facility will feature fully digital and intelligent production processes, incorporating advanced equipment and technologies to create a leading silicon wafer production base.

The factory’s main products are monocrystalline silicon rods and large-sized silicon wafers, specifically 182mm and 210mm, which hold significant potential in the solar photovoltaic industry. The factory is anticipated to begin operations by the end of 2024, with an annual production capacity of 3GW for both crystal pulling and slicing.

The construction of this factory is an advantage for Indonesia as the government is now preparing the roadmap for silica industry. Led by the Ministry of Industry, the roadmap is expected to be completed by the end of next year. It will guide industrial development from 2025 to 2035, aiming to establish onshore silicon wafer production capabilities within this period. The establishment of a market for silicon wafers will be a component of the government’s roadmap.

Data from the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry in 2021 indicates that Indonesia has approximately 330 million tons of silica sand reserves, with a significantly larger resource potential of 2.1 billion tons. The Ministry noted that these figures could change with future surveys.
