An official ceremony marked the restart of work on the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link, which will transport passengers between Johor and Singapore and was attended by both the Malaysian And Singaporean Prime Ministers, with the RTS expected to be operational by the end of 2026. The RTS Link will be a standalone light rail transit (LRT) system and will have a capacity of 10,000 passengers per hour per direction and will run between Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, and Woodlands North in Singapore.
The ceremony also marked the signing of a Joint Venture Agreement (JV), between Prasarana Malaysia Bhd (Prasarana), Malaysia’s leading public transportation provider, and SMRT Corporation Ltd (SMRT), Singapore’s leading rail operator, resulting in the creation of RTS Operations Pte Ltd, a Singapore incorporated company. RTS Operations Pte Ltd will design, build, and finance the RTS Link operating assets including trains, tracks and systems. This company will operate and maintain the rail line and will also be setting the fares, which will be determined closer to the start of passenger service.
