Petronas Creates Predictive Maintenance Solution for Industrial Facilities

Mar 2020

Malaysian state-owned oil and gas company, Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) announced the development of a digital solution called the Advance Diagnostic and Prognostic Technology (ADaPT) that predicts mechanical damage at various facilities and helps prevent unplanned plant shutdown and revenue loss.

The ADaPT digital solution is the result of a collaboration involving PETRONAS Group Technical Solutions (GTS), PETRONAS Chemicals MTBE Sdn Bhd (PCMTBE) and Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) which started in January 2018. ADaPT replaces manual, conventional inspections by predicting structural and mechanical cracks through continuous online monitoring, offering accurate prediction based on pressure, temperature and flow patterns. The solution can detect early signs of mechanical damage to allow prediction of asset’s remaining life expectancy and avoided unplanned shutdown of plants.

PCMTBE’s CEO Azlimi M Lazim stated that ADaPT has enabled the company to successfully avoid an unplanned shutdown that could have cost MYR 30 million (USD 6 million). It had also contributed to the increase of PCMTBE’s production by 7%, worth about MYR 63 million (USD 14 million), from April to December 2019.

It has the potential to be used at many types of facilities beyond Energy sector including construction, shipping, aeronautics, motorsports, and automobiles. Petronas is currently seeking potential partners to deploy ADaPT technology beyond the Energy sector.
