New USD 472 Million Terminal Approved for HCMC’s Tan Son Nhat Airport

May 2020

The Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) has received approval for a USD 472 million project for building a new Passenger Terminal 3 at  Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat International Airport. The terminal which is expected to help ease the overload at domestic Terminal 1 will have a designed capacity of 20 million passengers per year and a total floor area of about 100,000 square meters.

The project which is expected to begin in October 2021 and completed in mid-2023 also includes the expansion of parking lots and construction of supporting structures such as technical buildings, wastewater treatment plants and water station. The land lease on the project will be for 50 years starting from the date on which decisions involving land allocation and lease are taken. Ho Chi Minh City’s administration takes responsibility for the information, data, and content regarding the project’s appraisal documents.

The Tan Son Nhat International Airport is the busiest airport in Vietnam, with Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 for domestic and international flights respectively, handling a total of over 40 million passengers last year, 1.6 times higher than their designed capacity of 28 million. During peak period, Tan Son Nhat International Airport serves 840-850 flights with 130,000 passengers per day. The Transport Ministry had approved an increase in the airport’s capacity to 50 million passengers by 2025, with the third terminal managing 20 million and the other two managing the rest after upgrading.
