Vietnam’s Ministry of Transport has approved Hanoi’s proposal to construct the city’s 5th Metro Line and has submitted an application to the Ministry of Investment and Planning for a pre-feasibility study. This new line will run a total length of 417 km, of which approximately 76 km will be underground.
According to the proposal, up to 40 trains will run on the route, with six underground stations in the city and the remaining 15 stations in the suburb area, aiming to connect the inner city area with the Hoa Lac Hi Tech Park. The estimated total investment for this project is VND 65.4 trillion (USD 2.84 billion) , to be completed within the 2022-2026 period.
Construction on the Hanoi Metro System started in 2011; however, as of Jan 2021, only 4% of the project was completed. According to the Ministry of Transport, Hanoi’s authorities may pilot a project following the example of the Project Delivery Partner (PDP) experimented in Malaysia, whereby investors select an experienced contractor as the only focal point responsible for implementing the project.
