International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) has partnered with PLDT Inc. and Smart Communications Inc. to build and operate the first 5G enabled intelligent port in the country.
The 5G technology project will be implemented on ICTSI’s flagship port, the Manila International Container Terminal (MICT). According to ICTSI’s Vice President and Chief Information Officer, “It’s very important to us that we constantly drive efficiency and optimization in the cargo flows. And to do that, we also need to push that optimization, beyond the boundaries of the fence of the container terminal.” He added that “We see many opportunities with 5G to provide rich communication, not just to the multitude of technologies that we’re deploying inside the port, but to reach out to our customers and partners across the supply chain.”
Earlier this year, ICTSI disclosed that it allotted USD 250 million capital expenditure to complete the expansion and the construction of its various ports globally. This amount is a third larger than what it had spent in 2020.
