The Ministry of Communications and Multimedia of Malaysia (MCMC) is working with the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) to develop a Digital Content Ecosystem (DICE) strategy to enhance the local digital content industry and eventually place Malaysia as the region’s leader in creating and producing digital content.
Animation content from Malaysia currently generates around USD 39 million in export value. Combined ticket sales from two successful CG animated features – 2016’s Boboiboy the Movie and 2019’s Upin and Ipin reached USD 9.5 million. Meanwhile, the Malaysian game industry has worked on popular gaming series such as Final Fantasy XV, Uncharted 4 and Street Fighter V, and the game development sector recorded exports of USD 163.1 million in 2017 a 48.7% increase over USD109.7 million exports in 2016.
The new strategy will focus on attracting investment and developing the local talent pool, businesses, and the ecosystem through collaboration between government and the private sector. It also aims to advance research, IP creation, commercialization, branding, and marketing capabilities in order to improve the export potential of the sector. It will also look at best practices to promote a healthy animation and gaming Environment for all users.
