GIZ and Decathlon to Make Vietnam’s Garment and Textile Production Greener

Apr 2022

Vietnam’s garment and textile industry is striving for the implementation of green production to reduce emissions in response to the Vietnamese government’s commitment made at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26), in which the government aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

German Development Cooperation Organization (GIZ) and French sporting goods retailer Decathlon entered into a partnership to improve the environmental performance of Vietnam’s garment and textile manufacturers, supporting them to reduce emissions through efficient use of natural resources and energy, and chemical management.

GIZ and Decathlon are expected to kick off two projects, namely “Climate protection through sustainable bioenergy markets in Vietnam” (BEM) and “Fostering and advancing sustainable business and responsible industrial practices in the clothing industry in Asia’ (FABRIC)”. The purposes are to support Decathlon’s Vietnamese suppliers to increase their capabilities in climate change adaptation, efficiently use of natural resources, and manage chemicals at manufacturing facilities in 2022.

GIZ, through the FABRIC project, provides free e-learning courses via its platform, aiming to increase fundamental knowledge on climate change and solutions to diminish greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy efficiency. Furthermore, it also offers courses focusing on the implementation of sustainable chemical management systems. On the other hand, Decathlon will give training courses to its suppliers’ facilities to promote the use of bioenergy and other renewable energy sources and fund research into the biomass supply chain.
