Agro-industrial and food conglomerate Charoen Pokphand Foods PCL (CP Foods) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Chiang Mai University to develop insect-based protein from black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens).
According to Dr. Pairat Srichana, Senior Vice President of CP Foods, black soldier fly is a sustainable choice for alternative protein and fat sources. The company has been researching several applications for optimal benefits of black soldier flies since 2016. This type of insect may be the key to a sustainable bioeconomy for Thailand. However, a suitable farming system both in terms of investment and insect control within a limited space must be developed.
The MoU between CP Foods and Chiang Mai University aims to commercialize insect-based protein as a sustainable alternative food source for animals and humans. Under this MoU, CP Foods will fund the project and jointly develop the first black soldier fly smart farm in Thailand. This pilot farm will also be a learning center for students, farmers, and the community.
