The Minister of Transport of Vietnam has set March 2025 as the deadline for the first phase of the Long Thanh International Airport project. As a result, the pilot operation is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2025, followed by commercial operations in the fourth quarter of the same year.
The first phase consists of a 4-kilometer runway, taxiways, an apron, and a passenger terminal, as well as other auxiliary facilities, to service 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tons of cargo annually. Accordingly, the construction of the passenger terminal will begin in early 2022. Meanwhile, Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), which is the investor of the first phase of the Long Thanh project, is conducting the removal of unexploded ordnances and the erection of a fence.
Accordingly, the USD 16 billion airport will have four runways and four passenger terminals once all three phases have been completed. As a major international aviation hub in the region, it is expected to handle 100 million passengers and 5 million tons of cargo per year by 2040.
