Can Tho, the most populous city in the Mekong Delta, has made progress in its plans to become the first smart city in the southwestern region by 2025. Two years ago, the authority of Can Tho signed a cooperation agreement with Vietnam Posts and Communications Group (VNPT) to develop a smart city Infrastructure system.
The plans include an intelligent operating center connected with information technology systems to monitor socio-economic targets and the government’s performance, a mobile platform with a built-in camera system and intelligent security surveillance. All solutions will be run on the platform developed by VNPT. Smart city implementation is expected to enhance citizen engagement in administrative activities leading to improvement in quality of government services delivered to businesses and individuals.
The Department of Planning and Investment in the city is building e-government platforms, while the Department of Transport has started using IT to manage urban transport services. Going forward, the city intends to apply information technology for traffic safety management; information security and safety; food safety and hygiene; Environmental protection, and land use management. Intelligent parking systems will be set up at tourist destinations and an integrated traffic management system covering traffic lights, signs and traffic flow analysis, will be developed.
The city administration is encouraging the private sector to participate in the smart city project and help improve public services.
