The President Director of PT AEON Indonesia, Takahiro Osugi, recently announced that the Japanese retail chain is planning to expand its presence in Indonesia by opening at least ten new outlets in Jakarta and the surrounding areas by 2025. AEON currently operates four stores in the region and has exclusively operated within AEON Malls until now. However, AEON Store will soon be available in other malls as a tenant, such as those located in Alam Sutera or Cibubur.
To fund this expansion, AEON has allocated approximately USD 13.7 million, according to Osugi. In addition, AEON is planning to open a mall and an AEON Store in the Jababeka Industrial District in 2024. Osugi explained that this expansion is taking place as the economy is starting to recover, and the transmission of COVID-19 is slowing down.
AEON made its debut in Indonesia in 2012 and established its first mall in BSD City, South Tangerang, in 2015. Since then, AEON has opened three additional malls in the region, including AEON Mall Jakarta Garden City in East Jakarta in 2017, AEON Mall Sentul City in Bogor in 2020, and AEON Mall Tanjung Barat in South Jakarta in 2021.
AEON’s expansion into Indonesia’s modern retail sector provides a diverse range of products such as fresh produce, apparel, sporting goods, and home furnishings, which will compete with other large retail chains such as Transmart, LotteMart, and Hypermart.
Overall, AEON’s expansion plans represent a revitalizing move in Indonesia’s sluggish modern retail sector, signaling a positive economic outlook for the country.
