Japanese retail group AEON is set to invest USD 2 billion in Vietnam. Iwamura Yasutsugu, Aeon Mall Vietnam Director General, told local media that the company plans to use the funds to open up to 20 mega supermarkets in the country by 2021. Currently, besides the mega supermarkets, AEON owns 28 AEON Citimart supermarkets, and 112 convenient stores in Vietnam.
Aside from the key urban areas of Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, the retailer plans to open its next shopping malls in Can Tho, Da Nang, Vung Tau, and Dong Nai.
Aeon Vietnam also has a program to boost exports of Vietnamese goods to stores it operates outside the country. Yasutsugu said Aeon plans to raise the export turnover of Vietnamese goods through its retail network to USD 1 billion by 2025.
