The largest indoor vertical farm in Kuala Lumpur will be unveiled in the third quarter of 2022 by Sunway XFarms, a Malaysia-based agritech firm and subsidiary unit of Sunway Group, a local real estate and retail conglomerate. The new indoor farm will enable the urban population to access fresh produce within three hours of harvest.
Located in Sunway Tower at the heart of Kuala Lumpur, the urban farm will occupy three floors spanning 37,000 square feet. It is projected to produce at least 13,000 kilograms of fresh, healthy and pesticide-free vegetables every month. By utilizing precision farming techniques, Sunway XFarms’ produce is grown more quickly, healthier, and with much less wastage. It can also generate ten times more produce with less than 5% on-farm waste by utilizing 90% less water than traditional farming. A range of smart IoT sensors and cameras will be deployed to grow produce in a secure and controlled environment. The farms are driven by the market and technology, and the deployment of a smart farm ecosystem will enable remote management of output to precisely match the demand and make data-informed decisions, attaining important production metrics and sustainability targets.
All Sunway XFarms’ locations are strategically within a five-kilometer radius of the nearby neighborhood to reduce carbon footprint, food wastage, and nutrition loss, in line with Sunway’s ambition to attain net zero carbon emission by 2050 and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
