Vietnam to Boost Green Hydrogen Industry, Sets Targets for 2030

Mar 2024

Vietnam has announced to implement the Prime Minister’s decision No.165 on the strategy to promote hydrogen until 2030, with a vision to 2050. Accordingly, the country aims to produce hydrogen from renewable energy sources and carbon capture methods, targeting around 100,000 to 500,000 tons annually by 2030, with ambitions to scale up to between 10-20 million tons by 2050.

The strategy is expected to develop Vietnam’s hydrogen energy ecosystem using renewable energy, covering production, storage, transportation, distribution, domestic use, and export. It aims to ensure energy security, meet national climate goals, promote green growth, and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

Vietnam also aims to build a comprehensive energy industry ecosystem based on renewable energy and become a center for clean energy industry by 2050. The local authorities also called for increased international cooperation to share experience and knowledge in developing the hydrogen energy ecosystem.

Recently, the State Secretary of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), joined representatives from the GIZ Energy Support Programme (ESP) and leading German companies in Vietnam to assess the prospects of the green hydrogen sector in the country.

Delegates underscored the untapped potential of green hydrogen across various industries in Vietnam. Several proposals have been submitted to leverage mechanisms to provide technical and financial support to Vietnam, facilitating the growth of the green hydrogen industry.

The GIZ ESP has been active in Vietnam since 2009, with a total fund of EUR 57 million (USD 62 million). Its operations are focused on three main pillars: enhancing the policy framework, capacity building, and facilitating technology transfer.
