Thales Expands Industrial Collaboration with Indonesian Company

May 2022

Thales announced a strategic alliance with an Indonesian firm, PT Len Industri, for future collaboration on a wide range of defense-related themes. According to Thales, the cooperation on these themes corresponds with Indonesia’s ambition to modernize and restructure its defense capabilities in an increasingly complex threat environment. The deal was inked on 20 April, concurrently with the Indonesian government’s launch of a defense modernization strategy until the mid-2040s.

PT Len Industri and Thales will collaborate to study and develop C2 systems, military satellites, C5ISR, EW, UAVs, and naval combat management systems (CMSs). Thales specifically indicated that it would transfer radar technology, including local MRO activities and an Indonesian national C2 radar co-development.

Thales identified itself as ‘the Indonesian Navy’s primary partner for the last forty years, supplying combat equipment for all warships in service.’ Under the new cooperation arrangement, the Tacticos CMS, which equips both Martadinata-class frigates and was placed on board the Bung Tomo-class light frigate KRI Usman-Harun, would serve as the foundation for a national navy CMS for Indonesia.
