Port of Rotterdam Signs MoU with Local Partners to Develop BioHub Industrial Port in Sarawak

Aug 2020

Port of Rotterdam Authority (PoR) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Malaysian partners – the National Innovation Agency of Malaysia (AIM), Regal Lands Sdn Bhd (Regal) and Bintulu Port Holdings Bhd (BPHB) – to set up a BioHub Port and Industrial Estate in Bintulu, Sarawak.

The cooperation is aimed at finding a suitable BioHub location, exploring the BioPort and BioHub model as a possible economic growth engine in Sarawak, as well as boosting the biomass industry for green innovation and wealth creation in the state. The development of BioHub Port is in line with AIM’s National Biomass Strategy which focused on identifying local and foreign partners and stakeholders, and now moving to the strategic implementation phase.

BPHP, the company that is currently operating the two ports in Bintulu, has stated that the BioHub Port project will complement its Bintulu Port Group Smart Digital Green Port (SDGP) Blueprint initiatives to transform its operations, energy efficiency, management and organization and approach to the environment. In the meantime, Regal Lands, a subsidiary of Regal International Group Ltd, is gradually expanding its traditional business on construction and infrastructure development to undertaking a green related development project. The collaboration between the parties is seen as a mark for the new direction of the economic development and sustainability goals in the state.
