The Philippines is set to enter a “railway renaissance” with the completion of a unified railway network, promising economic growth and regional cooperation, according to the Department of Transportation (DOTr).
At the PhilRailway Tech Conference, DOTr Assistant Secretary for Railways Jorjette Aquino highlighted that 23 out of 69 key infrastructure projects will enhance the country’s railway system. Major projects underway include the North-South Commuter Railway, Metro Manila Subway, and extensions for LRT and MRT lines.
By 2030, the railway network will expand to 1,233 kilometers, up 356% from the current 270 kilometers. This expansion aims to connect key growth centers with emerging communities, improving accessibility, reducing travel times, and boosting economic opportunities for Filipinos.
Aquino emphasized the Marcos administration’s commitment to reviving the railway system under the “Build Better More” program, positioning the comprehensive network as a pivotal element in the country’s development agenda.
