The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) has been accelerating the process to register all Filipinos in the National Health Insurance Program (NHIP). As of August 2020, about 85.4% of the 110 million Filipinos were registered members of PhilHealth, composed of 51,785,474 members and 42,352,559 dependents. NHIP aims to register 95% of the population by 2020 and the entire population by 2021, to essentially give all the Filipinos access to health services and benefits.
This development is in line with the provisions for a nationwide universal healthcare system that will be executed, together with the implementation of a whole-of-government, whole-of-system, whole-of-nation approach in the program. Under the Universal Health Care Law (UHC), which was signed into law in February 20, 2019, all Filipino citizens are automatically eligible to avail of the government’s health benefits packages.
