GE Renewable Energy has signed a cooperation agreement with Vietnam Electricity Construction Corporation (VNECO) to develop the second wind power project in Binh Thuan Province. The partnership also includes an agreement on turbine operation and maintenance for ten years.
In February 2021, the company also signed a contract with Ocean Renewable Energy Joint Stock Company to construct 15 wind turbines for the first wind power plant in Lam Dong Province. The project is scheduled to be completed in the third quarter of 2021.
These projects are consistent with Vietnam’s Power Development Plan for 2021-2030 (Power Development Plan VIII), which targets to have 2-3 GW of wind power capacity by 2030. The development of several offshore wind power plants aims to ensure a sufficient electricity supply at lower prices and diminish greenhouse gas emissions.
However, the World Bank assessed that Vietnam could potentially generate up to 475 GW of offshore wind power, and estimates that the country can reach an offshore wind power capacity of 10 GW by 2030.
