KDDI to Support the Philippines’ First Subway System

Feb 2024

KDDI Philippines, a subsidiary of Japan’s KDDI, confirmed that it will deploy telecoms infrastructure for the country’s first subway transport network. The telco company signed a contract with a French transport systems provider, Thales, to support its build-out.

The subway project will connect the northern city of Valenzuela and the southern city of Parañaque in the metropolitan Manila area of the country.

KDDI will provide a telecom infrastructure to the network with a span of approximately 30 km in total, which will cover fifteen stations from East Valenzuela Station to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 Station, as well as the depot and the operation control center.

The company also confirmed that it will build the telecommunication systems and fare collection system for the subway in collaboration with partner companies.

The project will be financed by Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA), after it signed a loan agreement for JPY 104.5 billion (USD 695 million) with the Philippine government in March 2018.

The subway system is being developed to relieve the traffic congestion in metropolitan Manila as its population increases. The project is expected to be completed in 2029.
