Indonesia and Japan Partner for Renewable Energy Cooperation

Oct 2023

The Indonesian government is partnering with the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) to develop additional renewable energy capacity in the Southeast Asian country. The parties identified potential actions for the Indonesia-Japan Cooperative Energy Transition Program, and launched an energy and infrastructure transformation task force.

According to the Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Indonesia has large reserves of raw materials that may be utilized for carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). Japan will supply cutting-edge technology to help Indonesia grow this industry. The Minister also stated that Indonesia and Japan have agreed that the task force will bring together Indonesian and Japanese stakeholders to accelerate the development of the energy transition and its supporting infrastructure.

The minister and JBIC Governor also agreed on several cooperation activities that will be implemented immediately by the task force, including replacing steam power plants in Java, constructing a hydropower plant in Kalimantan, increasing the efficiency of geothermal power plants, improving energy sources from green and blue ammonia, and collaborating on CCUS.

In addition, Indonesia’s national utility, Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), intends to add 32 gigawatt (GW) of renewables to its electricity mix. To reduce its reliance on coal, which accounts for roughly half of Indonesia’s power supply, PLN will also invest in infrastructure linking to new renewable energy sources.
