In March 2020, Hyundai Motor Company announced plans to establish a Hyundai Mobility Global Innovation Center in Singapore (HMGIC), with support from the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB). The open innovations lab will explore ideas related to research & development (R&D), business, and production for future mobility solutions.
Hyundai’s new lab will be located in the Jurong Innovation District, an advanced manufacturing hub developed by JTC Corporation, the lead government agency responsible for the planning and development of industrial infrastructure. The lab will occupy a footprint of 44,000 m2 with a building area of 28,000 m2. Construction will begin in May, with completion expected in the second half of 2022.
The HMGIC will test out a small-scale pilot electric vehicle production facility before creating an automated platform to manufacture smart vehicles. The lab will also test an on-demand production system, allowing customers to build their cars with a broader range of customization options.
For its next steps, the carmaker also will pursue open innovation with local partners and educational institutions, such as the Nanyang Technological University, by conducting joint projects as well as co-founding research centers. Planting Hyundai’s open innovations efforts in Singapore’s forward-thinking atmosphere, the innovation lab is expected to clarify modern concepts, such as multi-modal mobility service, and to help define the future business direction for the company.
