German carmaker, BMW, launched production of battery module and battery pack in Thailand in September 2019. The activity is undertaken in partnership with the DRÄXLMAIER Group, which is one BMW’s suppliers. The initial announcement about this was made in November 2018.
The production site is located at the Chonburi Industrial Estate 2. Complete batteries will then be transported to Amata City Industrial Estate in Rayong province where BMW produces its plug-in hybrid 5-Series. The investment, worth a total of USD 16 million, was supported with incentives from Thailand’s Board of Investment.
The South East Asian region, a hub for automotive Manufacturing, is seeing increasing activity in the area of electric vehicles from local as well as international players. Mercedes-Benz and Toyota have also announced plans to produce batteries for electric vehicles in Thailand. Toyota submitted an investment plan to Thailand’s Board of Investment to localize Manufacturing of new eco-friendlier vehicles there.
