Maynilad Water Services Inc. (MWSI), one of the two water utility concessionaires which manages the west zone of Metro Manila comprising of 17 cities and municipalities, will be investing PHP 10 billion (USD 178.2 million) in the next 5 years to replace a total of 477.2 kms. of old, leaky pipes.
Maynilad had replaced a total length of 3,643 kms. of pipes since it acquired the west concession from the government in 2007 when the pipe network used to be the oldest water system in Asia. From January to April 2023, Maynilad had replaced pipes in 10 cities – Caloocan, Quezon City, Malabon, Navotas, Valenzuela, Manila, Pasay, Paranaque, Imus, and Muntinlupa.
For 2023, it set aside PHP 4 billion (USD 71.3 million) in capex for its Non-Revenue Water (NRW) management program to curb water losses and upgrade its distribution system. The program involves not just pipe and meter replacements, but also active leakage control using state-of-the-art leak detection technology, district metered areas establishment and maintenance, and sustained network diagnostic activities. To prevent supply constraints due to El Nino, Maynilad is also eyeing alternate sources through supply augmentation projects that could generate around 163 million liters per day (MLD) of additional water supply, such as reactivation of 45 deep wells in the west zone.
