Singapore to Develop its 1st High-tech Rainbow Trout Farm Using Danish Technology

Feb 2022

Singapore plans to produce 30% of its local production by 2030. In this context, shrimp aquaculture technology specialist, Blue Aqua, recently announced that it will be investing USD 34 million in its high-tech farm to operate the cultivation of rainbow trouts.

From 2016 to 2019, local fish production rates average of 4,600 tons annually, while in 2020 estimated production was about 3,960 tons, owning to lower sales during the Covid-19 pandemic. The new high-tech farm will have an annual production capacity of 1,200 tons of rainbow trouts per year, and it will utilize a proprietary technology system developed in Denmark, which uses sustainable land-based recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) aquaculture technologies. The farm will this contribute to a quarter of the current fish production in Singapore.

In Singapore and in the region, salmon is widely popular amongst consumers. But in recent years, trout has gained prominence as a premium cold-water fish with a similar color and taste. The production of trout farming is considered ideal because of the stable supply of good eggs, the suitability for high-density stocking of up to 150 kg per cubic meter, and a good feed conversion ratio.

In Singapore, it is predicted that the future lies in sustainable, smart faming systems that are not bound by environmental constraints. The farm will be a ground-level development, utilizing tall tanks with a high-density production system.
